Speed Limit by Croatian developer Gamechuck is an old-school arcade like shooter, the demo for which is out today (March 12th, 2020) on Steam.
And it is HARD.
Admittedly I’m not very good at games like this, never have been, and never will be, despite enjoying them. And when I say I’m not very good I mean while I was experimenting with controls/figuring out how things worked I literally got shot in the face and died about 2 seconds after starting the game. And then I continued to get shot in the face. But I enjoyed it. It did take me about 10 minutes to figure out that I can shoot straight up, and even longer than that to figure out how to get past the guys with blast shields.
As expected, and despite my ineptitude, the controls and game mechanics are simple to grasp; shoot enemies, don’t get shot, repeat. The music is suitably arcade-y and gets your blood pumping like it’s supposed to. The graphics are simple but clean. I particularly enjoy the passengers on the train all just minding their own business completely ignorant to the fact that you’re running through the cars murdering Swat teams.
The demo itself features partial looks at the first three levels of the game, while the full release has a total of eleven levels. The levels/stages do seem to switch pretty seamlessly between each other, which is always a good thing.
Below you can find extended gameplay (sadly not by me, you wouldn’t want to watch me play), and the official trailer for the game.
Upon release, the full game will include:
- “Arcadecraft”: a retrospective booklet on the history of arcades and the development process of Speed Limit and Gamechuck Arcades
- Wallpapers of exhibited art from the game from Art In Games Festival
- Original soundtrack forged with analogue synths and love
- Three part series of making-of video documentaries
I for one can’t wait for the full release.
